Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs Proud to Sponsor the 2012 Colorado Prince Hall Foundation Unity Breakfast

April 11, 2012

The Unity Breakfast is an annual fundraiser held by the Colorado Prince Hall Foundation to help further their innovative scholarship program. The program provides 4 year scholarships to students of participating school districts (currently 3, 8 and 11) that pursue a teaching degree and sign a contract to return to their schools to student teach for one year - and hopefully remain in that school district. The Colorado Prince Hall Foundation also provides support and mentoring for the students who graduate.

A Very Successful 'October for the Cure'

After our month-long Susan G. Komen for the Cure Donation Promotion 'October for the Cure', in which we committed $100 from the sale of every vehicle sold off of our lot between September 30 and October 30 to our local Southeastern Colorado affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we are pleased to announce that on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs donated a check for $6,400 to our local Southeastern Colorado affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure!

We came very close to our donation goal of $7,000 (just $600 shy) and are thrilled to be able to contribute to this great cause and to help ensure that the underserved in our community retain access to breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support.

We are very proud to make this donation and to be able to work with the tremendous group of individuals that make up the Southeastern Colorado office of Susan G. Komen for the Cure!

Pawtoberfest 2011

Even though Pawtoberfest 2011 didn't exactly come off without a hitch due to wind rain and snow, many more folks than originally anticipated showed, to run with their pooches and support the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

Despite the weather, Pawtoberfest 2011 drew more teams and pre-registered participants than past years events. Over $60,000 was raised for the community's lost and homeless animals as well as awareness for the Humane Society's key programs and services.

The make-up event, Pawtoberfest Redux, however, enjoyed phenomenal weather and ended up being a great make-up day for this great event - even if the pooches weren't able to run!

Susan G. Komen for the Cure CT 200h - Traveling The Pikes Peak Region all October Long

Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in cooperation with Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Southeastern Colorado has wrapped our newest hybrid model - the CT 200h in Susan G. Komen for the Cure livery to increase awareness for breast cancer and to support our October for the Cure promotion. Throughout the month of October, Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs will donate $100 from the sale of any vehicle during the month, to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, SE Colorado affiliate.

Our local affiliate of Susan G. Komen is proud to distribute 75% of all funds raised to local causes in our 30county area, El Paso, Teller and Pueblo Counties. The funds go to supporting breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support for women in need in our community. The remaining 25% goes to breast cancer research on a national level.

Look for the CT 200h Hybrid traveling all over the region
, increasing awareness of breast cancer and engaging with Survivors, loved ones of Survivors and loved ones of those lost to breast cancer. We are encouraging anyone and everyone with a connection to breast cancer - which, regrettably, seems to be almost everyone, to write a note on the hood of the car, or to place a decal with a note or memory on the car. We hope to cover the CT with notes and memories by the end of the month.

Together we can take a stand against breast cancer, increase awareness and help those in need in our community!

We Will Be Donating $100 per Vehicle Sold During the Month of October to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Southeast Colorado Affiliate!

Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs will be donating $100 from every vehicle we sell during the month of October to our local Susan G Komen affiliate. Our goal is to raise $7000 to help fund breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support throughout El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties. 75% of all donations will go to benefit these causes in our local area. The remaining 25% will be distributed to Susan G Komen for the Cure, the national chapter, for breast cancer research.

We have had some limited involvement with breast cancer awareness events in the past, supporting events like the Broadmoor Tennis Rally for the Cure this past July and the Pikes Peak Women Golfers Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament this past August, but this is our first time working directly with our local affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure. We are very energized by their passion and excitement for volunteering, contributing and working to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer and breast cancer research.

We can't wait to make this an unforgettable October, not only for Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs but for Susan G Komen for the Cure of Southeastern Colorado as we work to raise $7000+ for the fight against breast cancer.

If you have been thinking about upgrading your vehicle, there is no time like now!

The 4th Annual Butterflies and Friends Auction was a HUGE Success!

The Colorado Springs Rotary Club hosted their 4th Annual Butterflies and Friends Auction this past Saturday, September 17th at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. Over 200 attendees and artists joined together to enjoy fantastic food, drink and company as they prepared to bid on some exquisitely-decorated butterfly sculptures.

Auctioneer Kevin Patterson kept everybody in great spirits as he enthusiastically auctioned off 31 butterfly sculptures to the bidders on hand.

Over $100,000 was raised for the Rotary's Community Service Fund and for underfunded arts programs in Colorado Springs School District 11's Mark Twain and Will Rogers' Elementaries.

Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs was very pleased to be a top-level sponsor of this year's event and we are very excited that Rotary was able to raise more money this year than they ever have in the past!

The Rotary of Colorado Springs Presents the 4th Annual Butterflies and Friends Auction

Since it's founding in 1916 the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs has devoted itself to service of the local community and communities worldwide. Throughout the years, the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs has made significant contributions to the improvement of life in the Pikes Peak Region and throughout the world through the Community Service Fund (CSF), the Pikes Peak Rotary Endowment (PPARE) and The Rotary Foundation (TRF).

This year will mark the 4th year that the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs has held the Butterflies and Friends Auction. The Butterflies and Friends Project is a collaboration between The Rotary and local sponsors (including Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs) who have joined to raise money and awareness for art education and support for our communities children.

Butterflies and Friends is a community service initiative led by The Rotary Club of Colorado Springs to raise awareness and funding to ensure that children receive essential arts programs with the educational benefits that promote brain development, social skills, improved communication and effective learning. In the first three years we have raised over $100,000 in funds to develop and support arts education in District Eleven schools. This year we are working with Rogers and Twain Elementary Schools.

Some ways our funds have been used:
Monroe Elementary, West Elementary, West Junior High School, and The Bijou School partnered with Imagination Celebration to have Artists-in-Residence collaborate with their teachers to integrate arts into their curriculum. Queen Palmer Elementary used funds to create a multi-purpose arts classroom as well as staff a full-time arts teacher.

3rd Annual Rally for the Cure

The 3rd Annual Rally for the Cure Tennis Event took place on June 18th and 19th at The Broadmoor. Kuni Lexus of Colorado Springs was proud to help sponsor the event. 72 women showed for the tournament.

This unique, 2-day women's tournament for 3-5 players was held on Friday and Saturday. Saturday's play was followed by a court-side cocktail party and tennis exhibition.

By the end of Saturday's play, the "Pink" team had defeated the "White" team in the 3rd Annual Rally for the Cure tennis event. This was the THIRD year in a row for a pink victory! It was remarkably close, however. The final tally was 536 games for the "Pinks" and 510 games for the "Whites". The real winners, however, are those who are fighting the courageous battle with breast cancer. We're all rooting for you!

Ronald McDoanld House Charities of Southern Colorado's 19th Annual Cameron Memorial Golf Tournament

June 9 was a beautiful Colorado night. I was in the festively decorated Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame for the 19th Annual Cameron Memorial Golf Tournament's Pre-Tourney dinner and auction. When Shane arrived, his wide eyes betrayed him as a first timer. Asked why he had chosen to participate, he said, "Well, the opportunity to play the Broadmoor's pristine West Course tomorrow will be a treat - and, I'm here to learn more about your organization." Given that entrée, I was glad to fill him in! Shane was seated at a linen covered table with new friends enjoying music by the talented Jeffrey Alan Band. Soon, he was sharing both stories and plates of wonderful food from the Texas Road House; beverages and conversations freely flowing. Continuing to up his bids on fabulous silent auction items donated by area merchants, Shane was pleased to snag some great deals.

As Maggie Moo's delicious desserts were served, KXRM Fox 21's Joe Cole began the program portion of the evening. He shared about the growth of RMHC's cornerstone programs -- that between the Ronald McDonald House (now in its 24th year), the two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms (located in Memorial and St. Francis Hospitals) and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, the Charities served over 4,600 children and families just last year fulfilling the organization's mission of "lifting children and families in need to a better tomorrow." Shane learned of how the House serves as a home-away-from-home for nine families concurrently who have critically or seriously ill children.

The audience's focus was turned to two giant screens set up by J&S Audio as a video played showcasing our families. Upon its completion, Joe asked past and current families to stand, allowing the 250 guests to applaud their courage. Josh Bailey reached down and scooped his beautiful six year old daughter, Elizabeth, from her wheel chair. Holding her tightly, her toothless grin revealed her delight. Shane leaned in, "the gentleman holding the little red haired girl - weren't they just featured on the video?" It was my pleasure to personally introduce Shane to Josh and Elizabeth. Staff and volunteers have learned about tenacity and hope, strength and love from this little girl who doesn't let her inoperable brain tumor stop her from anything - even re-learning to walk for the fourth time.
After the silent auction closed, the Davis family was featured in a video showing their journey after the premature birth of their daughter, Serenity who is now a thriving 8 year old. Mom, Treasure, spoke of how the Ronald McDonald House Charities literally saved their lives; there wasn't a dry eye in the hall as we stood and applauded.

Children at the family-friendly event were invited to join Ronald McDonald for a magic show as the evening picked up with a fiercely competitive live auction.

The auctioneer's rapid fire chant and guests' laughter filled the room. Bidding was fast and furious; the top winning prize was $8,000 for a trip for two to play Pebble Beach during the Lexus Champions for Charities Tournament in December. Following the live auction, the Jeffrey Alan band again took the stage, turning up their brand of country.
Friday morning, bright and early, I again saw Shane at the Broadmoor. He said our event was so well organized, from volunteers directing traffic to the proper parking lot, to the always helpful Broadmoor employees, running shuttles and taking golfers' clubs to their carts.

After playing 18 holes, Shane joked, "While the provided complimentary breakfast was fabulous, we sure could have used more birdies!" Although his team struggled a bit, they all agreed it was a fun day of golf on a great course, even getting a visit on the 18th hole from Ronald McDonald, who posed with them for a team photo.
A delicious awards luncheon followed, with great prizes presented to the winners and others who were lucky enough to have their raffle numbers drawn. The day ended with Ed Bauer from Kuni Lexus presenting Beth Alessio, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado, a $10,000 check.

When leaving, Shane said, "You know, it was a really fun two days, even more than I expected. Next year's fundraiser can't arrive too quickly." Asked to say more about that, he replied, "Golf was initially the reason I got involved. But, after meeting the families personally and learning more about all you've done in our community, for so long -- I'm signing up again next year. Any way I can help your non-profit, I will. And, I'm going to encourage others to do the same. I had no idea of how many you've helped. Great work!" We're looking forward to seeing Shane again soon.

We'd love to schedule a tour of our facilities, bring a presentation to your organization or group or give you information on ways you can get involved, from volunteering to assisting with special events.

2011 Armed Forces Awards Luncheon

Article courtesy of DJ Montoya, 1st Space Brigade & Rachel L. Griffith, USASMDC/ARSTRAT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A platoon sergeant from the Army's 1st Space Brigade was selected as the 2011 Pike's Peak Outstanding Enlisted Member in Category Two (E-5 and E-6).

Staff Sgt. Benjamin L. Sharp, NCIOC, 1st Space Battalion Joint Tactical Ground Station master training and evaluation noncommissioned officer in charge (NCOIC), had a look of surprise on his face as he accepted his award from Adm. James A. Winnefield Jr., commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, during the annual Armed Forces Day Luncheon on May 20. The event is sponsored by the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce and was held at The Broadmoor hotel.

"I think this award is an outstanding achievement, because it represents my Soldiers. This honor just goes to show that through the support of your Soldiers, you can achieve anything," said Sharp of his win.

Sharp's selection as an outstanding NCO was not unexpected from the 1st Space Brigade's senior enlisted leaders.

"Staff Sergeant Sharp is an outstanding NCO and has been exceeding standards throughout his career," said Command Sgt. Maj. James Ross, 1st Space Brigade, "It does not surprise me at all that he won the mid-grade category."

Ross' feelings were echoed by the 1st Space Battalion Operations Sergeant Major, Sgt. Maj. Richard Janice, who represented the battalion at the luncheon. "I think it's awesome. With the career he's had, I wouldn't expect anything different out of him."

Two other Soldiers represented USASMDC/ARSTRAT as nominees during the luncheon. Sgt. 1st Class Gabriel A. Cardenas, NCOIC with the Directorate of Training and Doctrine, USASMDC/ARSTRAT, and Spc. Roger R. Rodriques, signals analyst, Headquarter & Headquarters Company, 1st Space Brigade, joined 14 other finalists in the running for three top outstanding enlisted spots.

"I am proud of all the Soldiers who are represented here today. Needless to say that Sergeant Sharp was recognized is a tremendous honor. Every Soldier here brought numerous strengths and credentials to this. I'm just proud to be in their formation," said Col. Eric P. Henderson, commander, 1st Space Brigade.

The competition was part of the week-long Pike's Peak Regional Armed Forces celebration. It allows Soldiers from Army Space to compete head-to-head amongst the more than 30,000 other men and women in the area from all military branches, to include active and reserve components, as well as Canadian Forces.

Previous USASMDC/ARSTRAT winners are 1st Sgt. Steven Adams who won in Category Three (E-7 & E-8) in 2008 and Staff Sgt. Nicholas A. Brown who won in Category Two.
